About
Who We Are
Resources – Teaching – Fellowship
The Cornerstone Ministry provides Christian educational resources along with personal teaching and fellowship for students, faculty and other campus ministries at Boise State University and the surrounding community.
We strive to be biblically based in all we do—theologically sound and morally pure. On primary theological issues we are consistent with historically evangelical orthodoxy, but we are fairly diverse on secondary matters because of legitimate differences between God’s people. We aim to set an example in keeping “the main thing … the main thing” while respecting diversity within the body of Christ. This means that sometimes people have a little difficulty determining our theological biases. It is not that we don’t have some, but we believe in not keeping them at the forefront as we all seek to grow in maturity and Christlikeness.
History
The Cornerstone has a long history in the Boise community. Our parent organization, Community Christian Ministries, first established this ministry in 1986. We have leased several different locations around the University over the years, and even owned property on University Drive with the goal of placing our resource ministry as close to the campus as possible. Unfortunately, the University later reversed their well stated plans and took the property via eminent domain. But we eventually relocated in a nearby leased retail location. Unfortunately, that private retail property in time also became the University’s and we eventually had to relocate to our current location at newly revitalized The Biblical Studies Center. But God works things for the good and we are thankful for both the ministry location and the ministry partnerships we have.
What We Believe
We believe there is one God who is infinitely perfect, existing eternally in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We believe Jesus Christ to be true God and in His incarnation to have been true man. He was born of the Virgin Mary, conceived by the Holy Spirit, died for our sins and was raised from the dead for our justification. He is now seated at the right hand of God in majesty, making intercession as our High Priest. He will come again to establish His kingdom of righteousness and peace. We believe the Old and New Testaments to be the infallible word of God, inerrant as originally given, verbally inspired by God and the complete and sufficient revelation of His will for man’s salvation and conduct. We believe man was originally created in the image of God. Through disobedience and self-centeredness he incurred both physical and spiritual death. Thus, all are now born with a sinful nature, separated from God and can be saved only through the atoning work of Jesus Christ. All who are unrepentant and unbelieving will be lost in a Christless eternity of conscious torment; for those who believe eternity will be spent in God’s presence, in His distinct joy and bliss. We believe the church consists of all those who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. They join together for worship, prayer, fellowship, the proclamation of the Gospel and observance of the ordinances of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. We believe in the second coming of our Lord Jesus Christ as both personal and visible. This is our blessed hope and serves as an incentive for holy living and faithful service. We believe in the Great Commission to proclaim the Gospel of our Lord to the uttermost parts of the earth.
What We Are:
A Place To Study & Hang Out With Friends
Frequently, people come into Cornerstone just to “hang out” or study their college class subjects. We have many couches, tables & chairs for that very reason. We also have several public use computers and free wifi. The house rules are simple; make yourself comfortable*, help yourself to pop, coffee or water, and do try to clean up after yourself! (*We do discourage extreme levels of comfort such as frequent “napping” or “couch hogging”.)
Discussion Groups & Bible Studies
During the school year, there might be a dozen scheduled activities happening during the week at Cornerstone and The Center. These are either sponsored by us or by other campus groups and are almost always open to anyone-anytime. Spontaneous discussions happen frequently — sometimes they are silly, sometimes they are serious. We encourage you to get to know others who are here and feel free to join in on the conversations. A wide variety of people hang out here and we welcome that. You will probably meet some new friends.
A Place To Talk
Maybe you just want to talk to someone about life issues? Perhaps to bounce some thoughts off someone about a situation in your life. Worldview or truth questions are always important, but your personal issues of today might be far more pressing than the big issues of tomorrow. Cornerstone is about being a place where people can talk openly and honestly, frequently finding encouragement and wise advice.
The Cornerstone Student Organization:
The Cornerstone student club has been a recognized student organization that was formed by students to help us fulfill our ministry goals of connecting The Cornerstone and its wealth of resources with the students on the Boise State University campus.
The club is made up of students who desire to see the Gospel of Jesus Christ worked out in all aspects of life. Student members do this by creating and promoting a number of different activities each semester. These might include things like: Bible studies, book reads and discussions on Christian living or special topic discussions on worldview, social and political issues. We also are involved in special outreach times and enjoy giving resources to others on campus.
